Gestalt language processing
Gestalt language processing is a type of language development often seen in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. These children learn language in whole phrases or ‘scripts’, so they need a different approach to assessment and therapy. Our approach is based on the Natural Language Acquisition framework.
Signs your child may be a gestalt language processor
- Repeats phrases from TV shows, songs, books or other people
- Uses long phrases before single words
- Says phrases that seem out of place, but mean something to them
- Uses the tune and rhythm of speech before the exact words
Gestalt language processing is a natural way to learn language. With the right support, children move from whole phrases to more flexible language that is their own.
